Library and Learning Resource Centre

The proposed Library and Learning Resource Centre at Munster Technological University (Formerly Cork Institute of Technology) was one of six projects included in a third-level institution’s PPP package tendered by BAM. Michael Regan was the Lead Architect for the RORSA Architects Architectural Team. The projects proposed for the Cork, Limerick, and Dun Laoghaire institutions sought to provide exemplary Library and Learning Resource buildings for each Campus.

The MTU / CIT Library Learning Resource Centre (LLRC) provides approximately 700 additional reader spaces and shelving space for 100,000 volumes to alleviate overcrowding in the existing library. This facility also includes a 100 – person lecture theatre, a café, and various group study facilities.

The LLRC site is to the east of the existing 1970 campus building,s and the proposed building forms a new gateway to the campus from the main pedestrian entrance on Rossa Avenue. The building is designed to be open and welcoming in character and will facilitate pedestrian links with the main engineering block behind and the existing library and IT building opposite.

The LLRC has been designed to provide a strong benchmark building and create a very positive first impression to the Campus. Its long linear form addresses the public road and bus stop area, while providing essential teaching and learning facilities in a quiet internal environment. As a PPP project, there was particular emphasis on design quality, integration of passive engineering principles, connectivity and future flexibility and adaptability.

High-quality, robust, low-maintenance materials will be utilised throughout the external and internal areas, enabling BAM’ FM / PPP procedures to provide and maintain a high standard of facilities management over the twenty-five-year Facilities Management period.

The design of the new Library Learning Resource Centre was subjected to regular detailed internal reviews with the BAM PPP Projects Team where all aspects of design development, construction, and lifetime maintenance issues have been discussed to reach the optimum design solutions. Research included visits to other recently completed third-level library and resources buildings and consideration of precedent projects in Ireland and elsewhere in Europe also informed the design process.
